Privacy policy

Surrey Development Map (whatsbeingbuilt.ca) and the What’s Being Built app for iPhone and Android show development applications in Surrey, BC. You can use the map without an account. This page explains what we collect if you make one, and why.
What we collect
- Your email address and password, if you create an account. Passwords are stored scrambled (hashed); we can’t read them.
- The places you save for alerts: the address you picked, the distance around it, or “All of Surrey”, plus your language.
- A notification token, if you turn on notifications in the app. It’s a code that lets us send notifications to your phone, and it’s linked to your account.
- Your location, only when you tap “Use my location”. It’s used on your phone to find projects near you and isn’t sent to us or stored.
We don’t collect names, phone numbers or contacts, and we don’t sell or share your information for marketing.
How we use it
Only to run your account and send the alerts you asked for: a weekly email, and app notifications if you turned them on. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.
Ads in the app
The app is testing ads from Google AdMob. They aren’t personalised: we ask Google not to use your activity in other apps or websites to pick them. Google may still collect device information to show and measure ads, as described in Google’s advertising policy. The website has no ads.
Services we use
- Supabase stores accounts and saved places, in Canada.
- Resend sends the alert emails.
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging delivers app notifications.
- Google AdMob shows the app’s ads.
- Netlify hosts the website.
Deleting your information
Sign in, open your account, and choose “Delete my account”. That removes your account, your saved places and your notification tokens right away. You can also remove a single alert at any time, or email us and we’ll delete it for you.
Project information
The development applications on the map come from the City of Surrey’s open data. We never store or show property owners’ names.
